Minister announces provision of additional revenue funding of£4m to Health Boards

Mr Micheál Martin, T.D., Minister for Health and Children today, 6th July 2001, announced the provision of additional revenue funding in the current year of £4 million to the Health Boards. This provision will serve to increase the capacity of the acute hospital system in the regions to respond to identified service pressures.

The additional funding, which is being allocated in response to priorities identified by the Boards, will be utilised for the development of the following services:

Midland Health Board

  • Increased acute medical activity at Tullamore General Hospital
  • Commissioning of acute medical ward at Longford/Westmeath General Hospital

Mid-Western Health Board

  • A & E Observation Unit at Limerick Regional Hospital
  • High Dependency Unit at Limerick Regional Hospital
  • Minor Injury Unit at St John´s Hospital, Limerick

North Eastern Health Board

  • Enhanced A & E Service at Monaghan Hospital
  • A & E Support for the Louth/Meath Hospital Group
  • Additional Capacity at Cavan Hospital

North Western Health Board

  • 10 Observation Beds at Letterkenny General Hospital
  • 10 Observation Beds at Sligo General Hospital

South Eastern Health Board

  • Commissioning of Coronary Care Unit at St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny
  • Commissioning of Acute Inpatient Ward at St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny
  • Commissioning of Acute Medical Ward at St Joseph’s Hospital, Clonmel

Southern Health Board

  • Provision of separate Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Emergency Theatres at Cork University Hospital
  • Re-organisation of Trauma Theatre arrangements at Cork University Hospital
  • 3 extra beds in Intensive Therapy Unit at Cork University Hospital
  • Commissioning of 10 temporary contract beds for Cork University Hospital

Western Health Board

  • Pre-Assessment/Pain Clinics at University College Hospital, Galway
  • Adolescent Medicine/Foetal Assessment at Mayo General Hospital
  • Community Care Support Services at Roscommon County Hospital
  • Pre-Assessment Clinics/Bed Management at Portiuncula Hospital

The provision of £4 million is in addition to £3 million recently allocated to the Eastern Regional Health Authority for the commissioning of an additional 53 beds in the current year and enhanced patient support services in Accident and Emergency departments.

The Minister is satisfied that this additional funding investment will allow for the enhancement of services in the regions in the current year and represents tangible evidence of this Government´s continuing commitment to the provision of additional investment for the acute hospital sector.
