Minister Áine Brady Opens the ‘Golden Years Festival’
Áine Brady, T.D., Minister for Older People, today (28th February, 2010) opened the second ‘Golden Years Festival’ at the Castlecourt Hotel in Mayo.
The Golden Years Festival is aimed at people over the age of 55 and offers a wide range of activities over a five day period from the 28th February until the 5th March 2010. Activities include painting classes, cookery demonstrations, table quizzes, aqua aerobics, bingo, nutritional talks, guided tours of Westport, day trips, bridge classes, historical talks, ballroom dancing classes, live entertainment and a fun talent competition – ‘The Gold-Factor’.
Speaking at the Castlecourt Hotel today, the Minister said “As we age and our responsibilities change, it leaves us more time to pursue old passions or discover new interests. Staying active and engaged with our communities is vital as we grow older. It keeps us healthy and allows us to share valuable knowledge and skills with others. Irish society obviously owes a great deal to older people, who have helped build this country, and continue to contribute to so many aspects of Irish life”.
