Martin approves commencement of £25m Portlaoise Hospital Development

Mr Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Health and Children has today (31 October 2000) approved in principle the commencement of the Portlaoise General Hospital Development. It is expected that the works will commence in the near future. The new project will be completed and commissioned in about 2 years time and will cost in the region of £25m including construction, equipment, fees etc. The facility will provide for:

  • 50 bed acute psychiatric unit (to include 6 beds for psychiatry of later life)
  • 25 bed paediatric unit to include overnight family accommodation
  • Major upgrading of Medical Ward
  • Major upgrading of Catering Department
  • New Waste Management Department
  • Revised site works to include increased car parking provision

“The important developments which I am announcing today will represent a significant enhancement of the acute hospital services in the Midland Health Board area and continues the £2 billion programme of further investment in the health services by this Government under the National Development Plan,” said the Minister.
