Martin announces publication of North/South MRSA Study
Mr Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Health and Children, announced today (4th July 2000) the publication of the North/South Study of MRSA in Ireland, 1999.
The Minister said “I’m very pleased to receive the Report of the North/South Study of MRSA in Ireland. For the first time this study provides us with very valuable information on MRSA across Ireland. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is an increasingly important cause of morbidity”.
The key recommendations which emerge from this study are the better use of antibiotics and a more pro-active infection control programme in our hospitals. The report will assist the development and implementation of best practice.
Quoting from the Report the Minister said “The effective control of MRSA includes good hospital “housekeeping” and cleaning practices, the correct use of antibiotics, a high standard of infection control generally and the use of specific measures relevant to MRSA”.
The Minister continued “This study has shown the value of cooperation in areas such as MRSA which I hope can be continued. I will also be ensuring that the recommendations in this report are followed up and addressed in the development of policy”.
