Lenihan launches Longford County Childcare Strategic Plan
Mr. Brian Lenihan T.D., Minister for Children today launched the Longford County Childcare Committee´s Strategic Plan. The Minister said congratulated the Chairperson, Ann Gerety, the County Co-ordinator, Committee members and the childcare providers of Longford for their work in developing this plan.
The Strategic Plan was formulated by the Longford County Childcare Committee after a careful consultation process to ascertain the needs of parents, children and the childcare sector in the county. It sets out the Committee´s strategy for childcare development over the life of the National Development Plan, until 2006.
The strategy is implemented through annual action plans and the Minister for Justice Equality and Law Reform has made available funding of €156,600 to the Longford County Childcare Committee for 2003. The City and County Childcare Committees will submit annual funding proposals to the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The funding is being made available through the Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme 2000-2006. This programme is Co-financed by the European Union as part of the National Development Plan.
Childcare providers throughout County Longford have received, since the Programme’s inception, over €3 million through capital and staffing grants to community, non-profit based providers and through capital grants to private providers.
The Minister concluded: “I wish all concerned with childcare provision in Co. Longford every success in their continued efforts to create a high quality childcare structure that will meet the needs of children whilst helping their parents to balance work and family responsibilities”.
