Lenihan launches Epilepsy Educational Video
Mr Brian Lenihan TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, today (27 September, 2002) launches the epilepsy video Out of the Shadows.
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in Ireland with twenty five thousand people suffering from recurrent seizures. The condition results in violent shaking and/or alteration or loss of consciousness. Of those affected, 60% respond to medication to control their epilepsy, although their lives can be restricted. The 40% of patients with uncontrolled epilepsy lead very restricted lives.
This video, part funded by a grant of €19,000 from National Lottery funding, was filmed at Beaumont Hospital with the aid of Dr Norman Delanty and his team. It is an educational video aimed at both patients with epilepsy and health professionals. It deals with current treatments in epilepsy, different types of epilepsy and how epilepsy impacts on peoples´ lives.
“This video aims to inform patients and their families about the condition of epilepsy and the practicalities of living with it. I have no doubt that this video will help dispel the many myths about epilepsy and eliminate the stigma of the condition,” said the Minister.
