Launch of 2005 Annual Report of the Office of Tobacco Control
Speaking at the launch of the 2005 Report of the Office of Tobacco Control today (Friday, 24 March 2006), Seán Power TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, announced that his Department was about to commence a consultation process with a view to commencing further provisions of the Public Health (Tobacco) Acts. The Minister of State said that this would strengthen already in place to address the threat to public health from tobacco consumption.
The Minister of State also said –
‘Last year saw a consolidation of the high levels of compliance witnessed during the first year of operation of the smoke-free workplace legislation. The response from all sectors to this measure has been very positive with continuing high compliance levels and strong public support. Crucial to the successful implementation of the measure has been the active co-operation of employers and their staff as well as the public and, on behalf of the Government, I want to thank them most sincerely. In addition, the staff of the OTC, the Environmental Health Officers of the Health Service Executive, and also the Health and Safety Authority, have all played a critical role in progressing this ground breaking public health measure.’
Finally, the Minister of State noted that Scotland will be introducing a smoke free at work measure this weekend and he wished every success to this initiative.
