Hanafin Addresses EU Ministers for Children
Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Children, is today (Friday, November 9, 2001) in Brussels, briefing EU Ministers with responsibility for children, on children´s participation in Government and on the success of Dáil na nÓg.
This is the second such meeting of Ministers for Children, and the agenda includes child-proofing of European Government policies, best practise on children´s participation and preparation for the UN Special Assembly on Children.
The UN Special Assembly on Children, due to take place in New York on September 19th, was postponed as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11th. But, it is intended that the re-convened session, which will include children, will take place in May 2002.
Minister Hanafin said “More than ever, we have the opportunity to give a positive message about the future and the common concern of all our children”.
“The world must unite in supporting children and their families in protecting them against violence, abuse and discrimination, and in eradicating poverty. Our aim is to create a world fit for children,” concluded Minister for Children, Mary Hanafin T.D.
