Government approves heads of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013
The Government has today approved the heads of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013. This evening, the heads of the bill are being published.
It is important to note that this is not the final legislation – the heads of the bill will be provided to the Oireachtas Health Committee and discussed in detail as we move to compose the legislation in full.
In December of last year the Government made a clear decision to provide legal clarity on the circumstances in which a medical termination can be provided in the interests of the women affected and in the interests of the medical practitioners who take care of the women and their unborn children.
This new legislation takes account of our obligations under the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights with due regard to our Constitution and to the Supreme Court ruling in the X case.
It is the hope of the Government that the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013 will be enacted before the Dáil rises for the summer.
