Press Release

€140m Major Capital Development at Tullamore General Hospital – 72 extra beds in new hospital

Speaking this morning (30 July), Minister Micheál Martin TD, said he was delighted to be in a position to grant approval for the major capital project at Tullamore General Hospital, “this latest project is further evidence of this Government’s commitment to develop our health services into the world class system which the people of Ireland deserve. The people of Midlands will be very proud of this development once completed. When coupled with the major developments at Mullingar and Portlaoise the Midland Health Board is well positioned to provide the highest level of hospital care possible to the people of the Midlands.”

With the completion of this development the bed complement at the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore will increase by 72. The projected total cost of the hospital project to completion over the next 4 years will be in the region of €140m.

The Minister continued by paying tribute to his colleague Minister Brian Cowen TD who as Minister for Health had established a Project Team to prepare a brief for the Design Team. The intention had been to concentrate on plans for a new Radiology Department, Accident and Emergency Department, Out Patient Department, Medical Records and a new Entrance and concourse. Subsequently it was agreed to also plan for new Day services, an area which also needed significant extra capacity given the increase in day case activity in recent years. The Design Team concluded that the preferred option would be to build an entirely new hospital.

The Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore provides a critical range of services for its catchment area in the Midland Health Board. This new hospital development is vital to address the current shortfalls in physical facilities and to provide services in accordance with the requirements of a modern acute hospital service. The is the final major element required to implement the Midland Health Board´s policy of developing an integrated set of acute hospital services over the three acute hospital sites (Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mullingar) in the region.

This major capital development will benefit not only the people of Offaly, but also the people of the entire Midland Region. Tullamore has responsibility for providing Orthopaedics and ENT services for the entire Midland Region. In addition the development will serve to reduce patient flows to other regions and in particular will help to alleviate further service pressures in the Eastern Region.
