DoHC response to IHCA statement on hospital beds
The Department of Health and Children has today (Tuesday 27th January, 2004) described the Irish Hospital Consultants Association´s (IHCA) claim that the Department of Health and Children does not know how many hospital beds there are in the country as a distortion of the facts.
In particular, the IHCA has queried the number of additional beds that have been provided under the Acute Bed Capacity Initiative. It is a matter of public record that the Department has provided funding to commission an additional 709 acute hospital beds in the first phase of the Acute Bed Capacity Initiative. A total of 520 beds were in place by the end of 2002 and this figure increased to 568 by the end of 2003. The 568 beds have been commissioned and are in use in hospitals throughout the country. A detailed breakdown of the location of the new beds by hospital site is provided in the attached table.
