Cowen gives go-ahead for new eye scheme
The Minister for Health and Children, Mr. Brian Cowen TD., today, 28th June, granted sanction to the health boards to introduce the revised Optometric Scheme with with effect from 1st July.
The new arrangements will offer a choice of optometrist to medical card holders and will result in greatly reduced waiting periods for sight tests and the provision of spectacles. On 29 April Mr. Cowen launched the Agreements which had been reached between the Health Boards and the Association of Optometrists Ireland and which form the basis of the new arrangements.
Mr. Cowen said
“At the beginning of this year I made an extra £1.5m available to ensure a smooth transition from the existing arrangements, this emphasises the importance I attach to these revised arrangements”.
