Calelly opens Conference on Women, Disadvantage and Cardiovascular Disease
Mr Ivor Callely TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children has today (22 April 2004) opened a conference on “Women, Disadvantage and Cardiovascular Disease.”
The conference, organised by the Women’s Health Council, will provide a forum for inter-disciplinary discussion on issued arising form the position papers “Women, Disadvantage and Health” and “Women and Cardiovascular Health” published by the Women´s Health Council last year.
“Women are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than breast cancer”, said the Minister, “but the experiences of women may differ from those of men. It is important to educate both women and their doctors about these differences and to develop gender sensitive policies.”
The Minister underlined the Government´’s commitment to the promotion of cardiovascular health, through the continued implementation of the Cardiovascular Heath Strategy and as a theme of Ireland´s Presidency of the European Union.
