Automatic eligibility for Medical Cards for those aged 70 and over
The Health Services Employers Agency, on behalf of the Department of Health and Children and the Irish Medical Organisation, wishes to announce that a basis for an agreement has been reached on the introduction of automatic eligibility for medical cards for those aged 70 and over.
The Minister for Health and Children has signed the necessary commencement order to give effect to the new arrangements with effect from 1 July next and the Irish Medical Organisation will be holding a ballot of its members with a recommendation for acceptance.
On this basis, all persons aged 70 and over, regardless of means, will be able to attend the doctor of their choice for GP services free of charge.
The Department of Health and Children will be placing notices in the newspapers in the next few days to advise people of the procedures to be followed by those entitled to avail of the new arrangements.
