National Maternity Strategy

Update: The National Maternity Strategy Creating a Better Future Together, 2016-2026, was launched on 27th January 2016. The Strategy was informed by the 1,324 validated responses received in response to this consultation process.

The Department of Health is developing a National Maternity Strategy, which will seek to ensure that women in Ireland have access to safe, high quality maternity care in a setting most appropriate to their needs.  Minister Varadkar established a Steering Group on 30 April 2015 to advise on the development of the strategy.  The  membership of the Steering Group can be viewed here and the terms of reference can be viewed here. The strategy is one of the Minister’s priorities for 2015;  it is intended to publish the strategy later this year.

The Department ran a consultation process from 18 June until 15 July so that the views of the public could inform the strategy.  Read the press release here. We are pleased to report a very high response rate – over 1,300 submissions were received.  We will now proceed to examine the submissions received, as well as the feedback from two focus groups.  A report will be submitted to the Steering Group which will in due course be published along with the strategy.
