Recent appointments to the University of Limerick Hospitals Group Board
Following a Public Appointments Service campaign, the Minister for Health Simon Harris TD has appointed the following five persons as members of the University of Limerick Hospitals Group Board for a four year period from 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2020:
Mr Alec Gabbett
Mr Gabbett is a solicitor and notary public and practices as a partner in the firm of Leahy & Partners solicitors in Limerick. He was born in Limerick, educated at Glenstal Abbey, University College Dublin (UCD) and the Law Society of Ireland.
He holds a Bachelor of Civil Laws degree from UCD, a graduate Diploma in Business Studies from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at UCD and a Diploma in Trusts and Estate Planning from the Law Society of Ireland. He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in 2000 and as a notary public in 2009.
He advises organisations, private companies, clubs and state bodies in relation to corporate governance, risk, child protection and compliance. He also advises on public/administrative law, enforcement prosecutions for state bodies as well as general, commercial and defence Litigation, employment law and licensing law. He is also a Chairman of Mental Health Tribunals for the Mental Health Commission, works as a patient advocate for the HSE and is a member of several other boards including charities in a voluntary capacity.

Dr. Mary Gray
Dr Gray holds the following qualifications – Graduate of University College Cork, MB BCh BAO, MICGP (Irish College of General Practitioners), Diploma in Health Law and Ethics (University of Wales), Diploma in Dermatology (Uni. of Wales), Certificate in Aviation Medicine (UCD), Diplomas in Obstetrics and Child Health (RCSI and RCPI).
She has held the following positions – Director of Medisec; Aviation Medical Examiner for the Irish Aviation Authority; Senior Lecturer, Health Law and Ethics, University of Limerick Medical School; Chairman, Irish Medical Organisation GP Committee; Director of Shannondoc; Member Comhairle na nOspideal.
Mr Jim Canny

Mr Graham Knowles
Mr Knowles originally trained as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in the U.K. He held a variety of operational management, executive and strategic roles in the NHS including Acting Director of one of the largest Health Authorities in the country.
He has a M.Sc. in Care Policy and Management from London Guildhall University and M.B.A (Health Executive) from Keele University. Until recently he was the CEO of the Royal Hospital Donnybrook.
He is a member of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and Chairs/serves on various Committees including Audit. He also chairs Health Committees of Inquiry for CORU, the Health and Social Care regulator.
He is also an advisor to ImpactWorks Ltd, a Hungarian company delivering training packages to Fortune 500 companies worldwide.
