Consultation Process on the Value for Money and Policy Review of the Economic Cost and Charges Associated with Private and Semi-Private Treatment Services in Public Hospitals

The Department of Health & Children is conducting a Review of the Economic Cost and Charges Associated with Private and Semi-Private Treatment Services in Public Hospitals under the auspices of the Government’s Value for Money & Policy Review Initiative 2009-2011.

The purpose of the review is to carry out a detailed analysis of the costs and charges associated with providing private and semi-private treatment services in public hospitals and investigate the fee collection processes used to recoup the cost of these services from private health insurance companies.

The review is being overseen by a National Steering Group established for this purpose. The Steering Group is currently undertaking a consultation process to support the preparation of the Review. The membership of the Steering Group, detailed terms of reference for the review and a brief outline of the key issues involved in each of the areas of (i) cost of treatment services, (ii) charges for treatment services and (iii) collection of fees are set out in the consultation document.

The Steering Group would welcome your views on the areas of cost, charge and fee collection. This is an important opportunity for you or your organisation to assist with the development of policy in this area.

Submissions should be made by 17:00 on Friday 4 September 2009.

Email responses should be sent to VFM_Review@health.irlgov.ie
