CANCER PATIENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Call for Expressions of Interest for Membership
Expressions of interest are sought for membership of a Cancer Patient Advisory Committee to be established in accordance with Recommendation 39 of the National Cancer Strategy 2017-2026.
Recommendation 39 of the National Cancer Strategy
The Department of Health will establish a Cancer Patient Advisory Committee to provide input into the development of programmes for patients with cancer. Membership of this committee will reflect the diverse nature of patients living with the effects of cancer, and will ensure that the needs of patients living in more remote areas are represented.
Membership of the Committee
Primarily we will be seeking those who have direct experience of cancer treatment as a patient, although those who have supported a family member or close friend through cancer treatment, or those who support cancer patients as part of their work will also be considered.
The Committee will comprise 15 members, plus a Chair (Department of Health). Secretarial services will be provided by Cancer, Blood & Organs Policy Unit of the Department of Health. A representative of the National Cancer Control Programme will attend meetings of the Committee.
It is envisaged that initial Committee members will serve terms of two, three or four years (to be decided by lottery). Membership will be for a 3-year period thereafter, until end 2026, with one-third of members turning over annually. This will facilitate wider involvement, while retaining continuity.
The Committee will meet quarterly and meetings will normally be held in Department of Health, though meetings elsewhere may be considered from time to time.
Selection of Members
Persons wishing to express an interest in membership of the Committee are asked to complete the ‘Expression of Interest’ form and return by email Cancer_Policy@health.gov.ie or by post (Cancer, Blood & Organs Policy Unit, Department of Health, Block 1, Miesian Plaza, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2) by Friday 19th October 2018.
The selection process will be undertaken by a group comprising representatives of the Irish Cancer Society, the HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme, the Department of Health and a member of the former Cancer Patient Forum. Those who express an interest in serving as members of the Committee will be contacted following the selection process to inform them of the outcome.
