Appointment to the Medical Scientists Registration Board

Following a Public Appointments Service (PAS) campaign, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris T.D., with the consent of the Minister for Business, Enterprise an Innovation appointed the following non-professional member to the the Medical Scientists Registration Board.  This appointment is for the period 7 January 2019 to 8 November 2019.

Dr Gary Kearney

Dr Kearney has been employed by Safefood, the consumer food safety promotion agency and a North-South body for over 15 years.   He is Director for food science with responsibility for the protection and enhancement of consumer health through a variety of food safety programmes and initiatives. Directly reporting to the Department of Health, Safefood develop citizen focused information and awareness media campaigns and host numerous community events for all societal groups. In addition to Dr Keraney’s science work, he is also the corporate spokesperson for food safety, hygiene and food sensitivity, and in this role, represents Safefood on TV, radio and social media channels.

Dr Kearney previously worked for the HSE for 8 years as a regulator and Official Food Examiner where his statutory role and responsibility was to prevent risks to public health & protect consumer interests.

He has a B.Sc. Hons in Chemistry, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and an MSc in Organic Chemistry where he graduated for all three degrees in the University College of Cork.   He has also completed a High Potential Leadership Programme in Harvard Business School US and several other executive programmes ranging for media skills to protected disclosures [whistleblowing procedures].

Dr Kearney is a member of several professional bodies including the Institute of Directors and the Excellence Ireland Quality Association Approvals Committee.
