Appointment to the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU)

The Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, has re-appointed the following person as a member of the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU). This appointment is from 10 July 2017 to 20 March 2021.

Dr John O’Mullane
Dr O’Mullane has been Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry at Cork University Hospital/University College Cork, a post he has held since 2000 until his retirement in September 2016. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and was appointed to and served on the Irish Medical Council from 2008 to 2013. He sat on the Advisory Committee on Medical Devices of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (formerly The Irish Medicines Board) and advised on In-vitro Diagnostic Devices (IVDDs). He was the Irish National Member to the European Committee for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine’s Higher Specialist Register. He is a registered Clinical Scientist with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) UK and is also a fully trained Peer Assessor for Clinical Pathology Accreditation UK.

As Clinical Director Dr O’Mullane represented Laboratory Medicine on the Reconfiguration Forum for reconfiguration of Health Services in Cork and Kerry from 2008 to 2011. He was Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences prior to his appointment as consultant at Cork University Hospital. He was involved in the development of the joint undergraduate and joint post graduate programmes in Biomedical Sciences at University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology.

Dr O’Mullane was President and Vice President of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of Ireland (ACBI). His research interests include analytical clinical biochemistry, laboratory diagnostics and education in clinical biochemistry having published in these areas. He has supervised many post graduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels. He is visiting lecturer to the TCD Medical School contributing to the MSc programme in Clinical Biochemistry/(Chemistry). He is extern examiner to Dublin Institute of Technology’s MSc Programme in Clinical Laboratory Science. Dr O’Mullane holds the Professional Diploma in Professional Regulation from UCD’s Sutherland School of Law.
