Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE)
The Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) system is a computerised health information system designed to capture hospital activity data. It is the principal source of demographic, administrative and clinical data on all inpatient and daycase discharges from publicly funded acute hospitals in Ireland.  HIPE was originally established in the 1970s, and since 1990 includes data on over 22 million discharges. HIPE data are used for a variety of purposes including case-mix based funding, service planning, research and reporting activity to international organisations.  The Healthcare Pricing Office (HPO) is responsible for the management of HIPE since 1st January 2014.
