Nursing and Midwifery Performance Indicators
The Framework for National Performance Indicators for Nursing and Midwifery was launched by Minister for Health, Simon Harris, on 14 June 2017. The development of this Framework is one of the priority actions in the agreed Strategy for the CNO’s Office 2015-2017.
The purpose of the Framework is to:
- set out the policy context for the use of nursing and midwifery performance indicators (PIs) to demonstrate the relationship between inputs and outcomes/impact;
- provide guidance on PIs including clarifying the relationship between Structure, Process and Outcome PIs; and
- ensure that there is a standardised approach to their development, prioritisation, endorsement, implementation, and monitoring.
In launching this framework Minister Harris emphasised that “Performance indicators are, first and foremost, about improvement. Indeed, the evidence review that informed the development of the framework concluded that there is already a desire among nurses and midwives to measure and improve performance”.
