Food Safety

We deal with policy concerning issues such as Food Information to Customers (labelling), Vitamins and Minerals in foodstuffs, Genetically Modified Foods, Food Hygiene, Official Controls on foodstuffs, Health Claims made on foods, Contaminants in foodstuffs, Bottled Waters, Novel Foods, Food for Specific Groups (FSGs) and other food safety matters.

We formulate legislation and secure funding necessary for maintaining and developing all food safety controls including providing observations on policy documents and proposed legislation.  Visit the legislation section of our website for more.

The enforcement of food legislation on behalf of the Department is carried out by various agencies (mainly the HSE) under service contracts with the  Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI).

Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)

The FSAI’s principal function is to take all reasonable steps to ensure that food produced, distributed or marketed in the State meets the highest standards of food safety and hygiene reasonably available. The FSAI aims to ensure that food complies with legal requirements, or where appropriate with recognised codes of good practice.
