Minister Daly meets Age Action and Nursing Homes Ireland
Minister for Older People Jim Daly met today with Age Action and Nursing Homes Ireland to discuss nursing home charges and in particular the additional flat rate fee charged by many for services such as social programmes.
Minister Daly said “Reflecting my commitment to ensuring that our older population are protected, on being informed of the concerns raised with regard to additional charges for services in nursing homes, I immediately convened meetings today with Nursing Homes Ireland and Age Action”
“Both of these meetings were very productive and I asked both stakeholders to reflect on these matters with a view to raising transparency in respect to such charges. I suggested some areas in which transparency might be improved including that the contracts of care, with a schedule of additional charges, should be provided to potential residents on enquiry to individual nursing homes rather than at the point of admission, so that potential residents are fully informed at an earlier stage. Nursing Homes Ireland agreed to this and will advise their members on the need to provide this at the earlier stage. I am also pleased that Age Action and Nursing Homes Ireland reconfirmed their commitment to continue their constructive work together and will engage further on this issue and others. The Department of Health will continue to monitor the issue”
