Recent appointments to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)
The following appointments have been made with effect from 15 June 2016, for a five year period.
Mr. Higgins has an extensive background in food safety policy; from working on the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) Act while Principal Officer in the Department of Health to becoming the first Director of Corporate Services at the FSAI. He has relevant experience on boards, particularly in the area of Regulation. He was on the Irish Medicines Board (now the HPRA) and is currently a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. He was also the CEO of the north-south body safefood, with responsibility for food safety matters.
Ros O’Shea joins the Board with nearly twenty years’ experience working in areas such as risk, compliance and Regulation working for the multinational companies CRH plc and Smurfit Kappa Group plc. She is also a founding partner of Acorn Governance Services, providing advice and training in governance, compliance and business ethics and is qualified as a chartered accountant.
Mary Cullen has spent her career as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse Coopers and worked for 10 years with specific responsibility for catering services in the Dublin office. She is, therefore, well acquainted with the requirements of food safety and hygiene. She also has board experience, currently sitting on the board of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital.
Derek Cunningham was re-appointed from 15 June 2016, for a period of five years
Derek Cunningham has been reappointed to the Board after serving a three year term. He has senior management experience in both the public and private sectors including in the farming/food and health sectors. Derek also has extensive experience in the management and response planning around high profile national food and health related issues including BSE, Foot and Mouth disease and dioxin contamination. Additionally, Derek has served as Chair of the RTE Audience Council.
