Consultation on National Data Strategy on Children’s Lives

The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs is currently developing a National Data Strategy on Children’s Lives. This strategy will set out the vision, goals, principles and actions to guide and support the collection, compilation and dissemination of data, statistics and research on children and will facilitate the utilisation of good quality, easily accessible, internationally comparable information about the lives of children in Ireland.

As part of the process of developing a National Data Strategy we are conducting this consultation which seeks to add to the evidence base which will underpin the strategy. This questionnaire has been designed to allow those using or providing data, statistics or research on children or those with an interest in this area to express their views, comments and suggestions for the Data Strategy. For the purpose of this consultation a child is defined as a person aged between 0 and 17 years.

While data on children is central to this strategy, it is essential also that we understand the wider context of children’s lives. Therefore if your work involves the production or use of data on families, schools, communities or any other factors which impact on children’s lives your data is of relevance to us.

If you are a user or producer of data please note that we are not asking for an inventory of all of the data you use/produce but rather for an overview of the role of data, research and statistics on children in your work.

The consultation is being conducted through an online questionnaire which can be accessed at (English) (Gaeilge)

Submissions should be made via this questionnaire which will remain available until 5pm on Wednesday 29th April 2009.

Submissions will be subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Acts and may be subject to release. If a person making a submission considers that any element in it is sensitive, those elements should be clearly identified and the reasons for the sensitivity should be specified. The Office will, where possible, consult with the person about any information which he/she has identified as sensitive information before making a decision in response to a request for release under the Freedom of Information Acts.

By completing this consultation questionnaire you will be contributing to a strategic plan for better information on the lives of children in Ireland. Please answer each question as fully as possible. If you have any queries please contact us on

Thank you for your interest.
